What's the name of this specific cultivar of Lady's Slipper Orchid? What's the best way to care for it?

I bought this lady's slipper orchid from Trader Joe's because of it's unique coloring; Blossom:Apple Green and White petals and Apple Green lip. Leaves: greyish green with dark green spots all over.

Should I spray water unto the orchid once a day to keep the humidity?

How to revive lady's slipper orchid?

I bought a lady's slipper orchid in March, It was in bloom and stayed in bloom for a long time. These was also a small shoot with a flower bud from the original plant. after the second blossom faded I cut it and waited for about a month before I divided the plants. right now both plants have small shoots coming out but they are both limp and look dry in spite of my daily spray of water. Will they survive?

What type of Lady's Slipper is this?

I found this flower in the woods in Charlevoix County, in Michigan.

I know it is a type of Lady's Slipper, but the closest thing I can find is the yellow lady's slipper, but it has brown spirals. This flower had very pretty purple spirals.

Here is a link to a pic.

Can't open your link, not a myspace member...

EDIT: Thanks for the new link.

Do you think it could be a form of this one: Cypripedium parvifolium var. pubescens?

It describes the lateral petals are sometimes being maroon.

I also read somewhere that there is some variation within the species of these plants. Some will be white to cream and that will be normal, the petal colors will also differ.

These are very pretty - we don't have those here in California. Here is a link to show the USDA map of where they are native to: http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symb...

Don't know if I gave you what you wanted/needed but I tried! :)

How can I transport this Lady's Slipper orchid, inside my house?

I found a rare wild pink Lady Slipper (Paphiopedilum) on my property, growing in rocks and moss. This type of orchid is very rare, not only where I live but in places across the world.I read I can transplant it inside my house. So how would I do that, and how will I take care of it? I really want to keep it safe, because I don't think it would survive in where it is living right now. So how can I transplant it and what are some tips for it? Thanks in advance.

How can I transport this Lady's Slipper orchid, inside my house?
Lady Slippers are very rare and do not transplant very well and usually don't survive. One of the reasons these orchids are so endangered is people transplanting them, however, if you do not think it will survive in it's current location you can follow these steps. At transplanting time, purchase a potting mix formulated especially for orchids and made of peat moss and perlite. Remove the plant gently from the ground, being careful to dig a large enough area around the plant to get out all the roots. Sterilize your shears with a match or a butane lighter, then remove the flower stem near the base of the plant. Examine the roots for any signs of disease. Cut injured roots away with the sterilized shears.

Shake excess soil from the roots, and position the plant in the new pot so that the leaves are just at the top of the pot. Add fresh potting mix, and work it between the roots. Water with tepid water after transplanting. There are also orchid pots on the market that have holes in the sides as well as the bottom to aid drainage. There are several excellent books on the market on more detailed care of orchids, most being available at amazon.com.

How do I get my lady slipper orchid to bloom?

The plant is healthy and I have fertilized it and keep it with my African violets under those light conditions. Anything else I need to do to get the lady slipper to bloom?

How do I get my lady slipper orchid to bloom?
Lady slippers are indigenous to cold areas. It needs a cold snap and short days to bring it into bloom. Try leaving it outside for a month if your temperatures at night do not drop below 30 degrees in winter. If it's too cold at night, leave it on the porch or garage where it can be cool for a while.

If you are concerned that it will not survive in it's current location, I would advise consulting with a professional horticulturist. Moving it may kill it.

When something is endangered in the wild, it is best to safeguard it where it occurs naturally.

Reply:In MOST states it's illegal to touch a Lady slipper. They're on the National Endagered list. Just leave it be, protect it as best as you can. Wild orchids do NOT transplant readily and require a LOT of moisture, shade and warmth. It's BEST to just leave it where it is and let nature do the job of caring for it. Nature is ALWAYS the best answer for wild, rare plants.
